The fastest way to kill the energy at a table is a long, fumbling setup. Everyone arrives keen to play, and then they watch one person sift through a bag of mixed tokens for ten minutes while the snacks go cold. I've set up thousands of games over the years, and the difference between a slick start and a slog is almost never the game. It's the routine.
Setup feels like busywork because most people do it differently every time, rediscovering the same steps from scratch. Give it a repeatable shape and it shrinks dramatically. Here's the routine I use for almost any game, plus the small habits that make the next session even faster.
Half of a slow setup happens before the game even hits the table, because the box is a jumbled mess. The components from your last session got dumped back in loose, and now everything has to be untangled. The fix is to put the work in once, at the end, so the next start is clean.
A decent insert or a handful of zip bags pays for itself almost immediately. When each type of token, card, and tile has a home, setup becomes a matter of grabbing the right bag rather than hunting for stray pieces. Once the box is open, work from the outside in. Start with the things everyone shares: the main board, the supply piles, the central decks. This gives the table a visual anchor and lets other people start helping, because they can see what's taking shape.

Doing the communal setup first matters because it's the part that can't be parallelized later. Everyone needs the shared board in place before their own pieces make sense. Knock it out, and the rest of the work splits neatly among the players.
Now handle the individual setups. Almost every game gives each player an identical starting kit: a player board, a set of pieces in their color, a small hand of cards, a couple of starting resources. The trick is to deal these out in one sweep rather than fully equipping one player before moving to the next.
Grab all the player boards and pass them around. Then all the colored pieces. Then deal the starting hands. Going component by component across the whole table is far faster than going player by player, and it's much harder to give someone the wrong number of pieces. If the game has a randomized starting hand or a draft, save that for last so nobody's waiting on a shuffle.
This is also the moment to settle who plays which color and where everyone sits, small things that stall a setup when left to the last second. Decide them quickly and move on. The components don't care, and neither should the table.
The single fastest setups I've ever seen all share one feature: more than one pair of hands. A setup that takes one person ten minutes often takes a table of four about two. The only reason people don't do this is that nobody assigns the jobs, so everyone waits politely for the host.

Before anyone takes a turn, do a quick sweep. Look at the board and ask whether it matches the picture in the rulebook, which almost always shows a fully set-up game. This thirty-second glance catches the missing token or the deck left unshuffled before it derails the opening rounds, when fixing it is a real pain.
It's also the moment to confirm everyone has their full starting kit. A player short a resource or a card on turn one is a small disaster that's trivial to prevent now and annoying to untangle later. Count the obvious things: starting hands, opening resources, player pieces.
